A Fun Water Safety Drill
Is your child super excited about going to camp this summer? Great! Camp can be a blast for preschoolers and an incredible learning experience as well, but sending a child to camp can also cause anxiety for parents, especially when it comes to water safety. Will the counselors and lifeguards watch your child like a hawk? As a parent, your top priority is protecting your child, so don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions of the camp director and/or director of aquatics before you sign your child up. Here are several to get you started:
What type of training and certification do the lifeguards and counselors have at the pool or lake?
Has the camp had any near-drownings or injuries at the pool or lake?
How is the pool supervised when the children are swimming? How is it supervised when the pool or lake is not in use?
Are the lifeguards and counselors CPR certified?
Is a strict buddy system enforced at all times?
What ages are the counselors and lifeguards?
How do you select your staff? Do you perform background checks?
Are the camp’s flotation devices coastguard approved?
How do the lifeguards decide if a camper is ready to swim without a flotation device?
Do the counselors go in the water and supervise the campers during swim time?
What is the ratio of campers to counselors at the pool or lake?
How many lifeguards are on duty during swim time?
